People passing a Grey Heron on the shores of Grasmere in the Lake district UK. This bird is far more common in the UK than it was 30 years ago. This is probably partly due to the cleaning up of rivers and water courses but is mainly due to climate change causing much milder winters. In the past harsh winters would leave their feeding grounds frozen leading to many Herons starving in winter
