A sheep tick that fed off a pet dog. These parasites will attach to humans and pets and can carry diseases like Lymes disease and encephalitis. Many species of tick are becoming more common as milder winters enable them to survive more easily. Ticks are highly sensitive to temperature change and are unable to survive in cold environments. Many pathogens and diseases that affect humans are spreading as a result of warmer conditions brought on by climate change. Recent studies have shown that tick activity is prolonged by shorter milder winters allowing them to infect greater numbers of hosts. They are also spreading northwards.
