A plane at Kangerlussuaq airport on Greenland being used to fly transect flights over the Greenland ice sheet to measure air pollution from forest fires in Siberia. This project is part of the International Polar Year. The soot from forest fires settles out on the ice sheet darkening the surface layer. This causes the ice to absorb more of the suns energy and melt even faster.
