IMG_3042_water security.jpg Lake Mulwala at Yarrawonga was created when the Murray River was dammed to provide irrigation water for surrounding farmland. Drought has meant that the trees that were killed when they were first drowned are now increasingly revealed as the lake levels drop. Damming of the Murray River for irrigation water extraction and climate change driven drought has lead to unprecedented low river flows on the Murray River.

IMG_3162_vinyard.jpg An abandoned vinyard near Yarrawonga , Australia. Victoria and New South Wales have been impacted by the worst drought in living memory. The crops will not grow without irrigation water which the farmers have to purchase. Vinyards are having to spend up to $100,000 a year on irrigation water which hugely impacts on their profitability. In some areas vinyard owners have had to give up altogether, as they could no longer afford to purchase water. Climate change is likely to make drought conditions more common, impacting on crop production and food security in many areas.
