IMG_0624_skeleton.jpg Following the warmest and driest April on record, moorland fires broke out across the UK. Ogden Moor near Wainstalls above Halifax was one of many victims. Several square Km of moorland burned for four days. The blaze was tackled by fire fighters, but despite their efforts the blaze destroyed valuable moorland habitat, killing mammals and amphibians and destroying nesting birds nests. The wind farm was also closed down for a number of days as the blades were a danger to the helicopters fighting the blaze with aerial water drops. This shot shows a skeleton of a rabbit that was caught out and killed by the blaze.

IMG_3986_wild meat.jpg A local venison butcher at Kendal college explain to catering students how to butcher venison. Eating wild venison is climate friendly in two ways. Firstly it helps to cut down on food miles and the carbon footprint of food production. Secondly it helps local woodlands to regenerate. Many woodlands are negatively impacted by deer numbers, as they no longer have any natural predators.
