IMG_1663_damage.jpg On saturday 18th July 2009 70 mm of rain fell over the north East UK onto already saturated ground. The river Wear burst its banks, innundating the floodplain around the city of Durham and flooding many properties. As the water in the river started to drop, a section of the banking collapsed into the river. The flood water that was held back on the floodplain now suddenly had a shortcut back into the river. As the floodwaters tore back into the river channel they eroded a huge gully that has been called the Durham Canyon. The erosion feature is up to 15 feet deep, up to 100 feet across and 200 yards long. 12,000 cubic metres of soil were washed into the river from a field of Barley at Shincliffe near Durham. As climate change accelerates such damage from severe weather events will increase.

366W8816.jpg Chocolate biscuits washed overboard from the Riverdance which washed ashore off Blackpool. The Riverdance was one of 3 ships lost that day off the UK. The ship was hit by a huge wave that shifted the vehicle cargo on the decks causing the ship to list violently. The crew were airlifted off by RAF helicopter before the ship ran aground. As climate change takes hold more and more damage will occur as the weather becomes more violent.

366W0035.jpg For the Inuit residents of Shishmaref, a tiny island between Alaska and siberia, global warming is a double whammy. Firstly sea ice that used to envelop the island around late September is now not forming until December. this leaves the island vulnerable to storms that have already washed 10 houses into the sea, leading to them being referred to as the worlds first refugees from global warming. Other houses have had to be moved back from the edge. Secondly the animals they rely on as part of their subsistance existance are becoming harder to find, as they migrate further north, away from the island.
