IMG_7932_deck.jpg The jack up barge, Kraken, loaded with wind turbine blades for the Walney Offshore windfarm project, off Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, UK. When finished it will have 102, 3.6 MW turbines, giving a total capacity of the Walney project of 367.2 MW, enough to power 320,000 homes. The rotor diameter of the turbines is 107m for Walney 1 and 120 m for Walney 2. The wind farm is owned and constructed by Dong Energy.

IMG_2505_working at height.jpg The Walney Offshore Windfarm project is located 15km off Barrow in Furness in Cumbria. The project consists of Walney 1 and Walney 2 each with 51 turbines. When finished it will have 102 3.6 MW turbines, giving a total capacity of the Walney project of 367.2 MW, enough to power 320,000 homes. The rotor diameter of the turbines is 107m for Walney 1 and 120 m for Walney 2. The wind farm is owned and constructed by Dong Energy. This shot shows the yellow transition pieces, that fit onto the monopile, that holds the structure to the sea bed. The tower and turbine is then fixed onto the transition piece.

IMG_5352_farming.jpg A pear orchard near Shepperton, Victoria, Australia. This area of Victoria is renowned for its fruit crops, but like many areas of Victoria and New South Wales has been impacted by the worst drought in living memory. The crops will not grow without irrigation water which the farmers have to purchase. This farmer was spending $40,000 a year on water which was impacting on his profitability. In some areas farmers have had to give up as they could no longer afford to purchase water. Climate change are likely to make drought conditions more common, impacting on crop production and food security in many areas.
