IMG_5281_crop damage.jpg A vinyard in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia. Victoria and New South Wales have been impacted by the worst drought in living memory. The crops will not grow without irrigation water which the farmers have to purchase. Vinyards are having to spend up to $100,000 a year on irrigation water which hugely impacts on their profitability. In some areas vinyard owners have had to give up altogether, as they could no longer afford to purchase water. Climate change is likely to make drought conditions more common, impacting on crop production and food security in many areas. These vines have been left to wither and die as the farmer could no longer afford to irrigate them. Ironically the area has had some rain which has allowed the grass to grow, but is too late for the vines.

IMG_5603_urban wildlife.jpg Fruit bats flying in front of Sydney city centre tower blocks, Australia. Climate change has lead to many periods of heatwave and excessive temperatures. Temperatures over 42 degrees centigrade (now not uncommon in many parts of the fruit bats range) have resulted in fruit bat mortality causing them to die form hyperthermia.

IMG_1851_kinglake.jpg Burnt forest and a sign at Kinglake which was one of the worst affected communities of the catastrophic 2009 Australian Bush Fires in the state of Victoria. 173 people were killed and many more left injured and traumatised, with 7000 left homeless. The fires were as a result of a prolonged drought and extreme high temperatures, conditions that are being exaserbated by climate change.

IMG_4478_tree.jpg China is in the middle of the worst drought in 50 years. Precipitation totals have fallen significantly across most of China's northern provinces. 60% of China's 669 major cities face water shortages, of these 110 face serious water shortages. Climate change modelling shows that Northern China is going to get significantly drier leading to crop failure and desertification which is already happening in many places in northern China. The Chinese are trying to combat this by planting millions of trees. Sadly many of these trees die as the ground is now just too dry to support them. This shot shows tree nurseries raising pine trees to plant out across Inner Mongolia
