IMG_4855_water carrying.jpg Tongshuan in Inner Mongolia like many areas of northern China is in the middle of the worst drought in 50 years, brought on by climate change. Many peasant famalies have no running water in their houses and have to walk long distances each day to fetch water, from an ever dwindling resource. 60% of China's major cities face water shortages, of these 110 face serious water shortages, a situation which will only get worse as climate change accelerates.

366W1253_global warming_solway.jpg In the early morning of Monday 10th March 2008 an extreme low pressure system tracked across the British Isles accompanied by strong winds and coinciding with the spring high tides. That morning locals noticed a small hole in the road that runs from Allonby to Silloth in Cumbria. By the next day the hole had grown larger. On the Wednesday more gale force winds and high tides battered the Solway coast. These further undermined the sea wall and washed out material behind the coastal defences, causing the road to collapse in two places. The largest hole was 40 feet deep and a similar distance across. Here council contractors are repairing the damage. As sea levels rise and weather becomes stormier more and more damage will be caused to coastal infrastructure.

366W0732_global warming_sign.jpg Trees and ski track sign in the Urho Kekkosen National Park near Saariselka Northern Finland. Climate change has already raised average temperatures by 0.7 oC over the last century. Winters are getting both warmer and wetter and in Southern Finland winters are becoming increasingly snow free. As permafrost melts across the Arctic huge quantities of carbon dioxide and methane could be released leading to even further warming. Such iconic winter scenes could in a relatively short space of time become a thing of the past.
