IMG_7673_flooding.jpg On Saturday 6th March 2010, Melbourne was hit by the worst tropical storm they had experienced in over 100 years. It started with a hail storm, with hail 12cm across (the size of lemons) followed by torrential rain. $millions of damage was caused and many of the cities streets were flooded causing chaos to transport. Whilst they were glad of the water in this drought stricken land, it seems yet further evidence of the impact of climate change which is resulting in more severe weather in many areas.

366W0070.jpg For the Inuit residents of Shishmaref, a tiny island between Alaska and siberia, global warming is a double whammy. Firstly sea ice that used to envelop the island around late September is now not forming until December. this leaves the island vulnerable to storms that have already washed 10 houses into the sea, leading to them being referred to as the worlds first refugees from global warming. Other houses have had to be moved back from the edge. Secondly the animals they rely on as part of their subsistance existance are becoming harder to find, as they migrate further north, away from the island.
Raymond Weyiouanna and daughter, considered to be the worlds first refugee from global warming after his house was washed into the sea in 1998
