IMG_4406_level.jpg Riverside One is a new concept in greenbuild. It adheres to the ten principles of One Planet living, Built by BioRegional Quintain in Middlesbrough, Teeside, UK. It is an exceptinal green building, whose individual housing units will have a low carbon footprint. The whole block is heated by a biofuel boiler. During construction it used recycled oil rig pipes for piling, the concrete was mixed with recycled agregate, super insulated with earth wool, it uses grey recycled water to save water, locally sourced timber, the electricity for the building is sourced from renewable sources and the buidling incorporates Swift bird boxs and bat boxs. Residents are encouraged to car share and use local organic vegetable box schemes.

IMG_4257_wildlife recording.jpg The EMEC centre's test site of Billia Croo in Stromness, Orkney, Scotland, UK. The European Marine Energy Centre is the only accredited wave and tidal energy test centre for marine renewable energy in the world. This shot shows a wildlife moitor, who's job it is to monitor the marine life that is using the test site, so they can see if the equipment is affecting wildlife.

IMG_9469_p.jpg In 2008 China became the worlds largest emitter of greenouse gases, fuelled by high levels of economic growth and electricity mainly being generated by dirty, highly polluting coal fired power stations. The Chinese are also investing heavily in renewable energy projects. Here a wind farm is built near Hujifumo in Heilongjiang Province northern China.

IMG_3262_p.jpg The area of the North Wales coast between Prestatyn and Abergele was reclaimed from an ancient salt marsh. As such it is flat, low lying and susceptible to coastal flooding. Climate change driven sea level rise increases the risk making it one of the most at risk coastal areas in the British Isles. In 1990 a combination of strong westerly winds a high tide and a 1.5m storm surge breached 400 metres of the sea wall and inundated 2800 properties in Towyn and Kinmel Bay. The rocks have been placed to try and strengthen the sea wall.
