It caused unprecedented flooding, with Cockermouth being particularly badly hit after both the Cocker and Derwent burst their banks. The main street was 5 feet underwater and £millions worth of damage was caused. This shot shows the remains of Northside Bridge in Workington which was swept away in the floods killing PC Bill Barker who was trying to stop traffic from going onto the bridge when it collapsed, with flowers left in his memory.
