20100713_IMG_4176.jpg Thirlmere reservoir in the Lake District UK, with a hosepipe ban in affect in the North West. United Utilities applied for the drought order, after the driest start to the year since 1929, with less than 50% of normal rainfall. The drought comes hot on the heals of the worst floods that Cumbria has ever seen, when in November 2009, United Utilities had to open the emergency valves to let water out, as the dam was in danger of collapsing when the water reached unprecendented high levels. Climate modelling shows that as the atmosphere warms we are more likely to move to a cycle of flood followed by drought.

20101020_IMG_2174.jpg The Ineos oil refinery at Grangemouth in the Firth of Forth, Scotland, UK. It is Scotlands only oil refinery. It takes oil from a pipeline from the Forties North Sea production area, and processes 10 million tonnes of crude oil a year. As such it is a large contributor to climate change.

20120318_IMG_3057.jpg Peat hags near Loadpot Hill above Ullswater in the Lake District, UK. Peat bogs are a great carbon sink, as the sequestrate large amounts of carbon. They are also great natural sponges that are important water reservoors. They help to balance out water flows, balancing the worst excesses of drought and flood.
