IMG_2205_rape.jpg The Glentaggart open cast coal mine in Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK. As well as the disastrous climate change consequences of continuing to mine and burn coal, living close to open cast coal mines has a huge negative affect on peoples health. Rates of Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease are up to 5 times the national average as well as vastly increased risk of asthma, hypertension, hypothyroidism and cancer.

IMG_2941_china.jpg In 2008 China officially became the worlds largest emitter of C02 (greenhouse gases), largely driven by its ever increasing demand for energy most of which is met by producing electricity from coal fired power stations. Worryingly China is building a new coal fired power station every week and has huge reserves of coal, much of which is very low grade and highly polluting. Here trucks haul highly polluting low grade coal from an open cast coal mine near Heihe, Heilongjiang province on the Chinese Russian border.

IMG_3188_green build.jpg The Strata building at the Elephant and Castle in London, is the first buolding in the world where wind turbines have been integrated into the fabric of the building. It has three 15 megawatt turbines that generate 8% of the buildings energy needs. It was designed by BLFS architects.

IMG_5832_renewables.jpg A hydrogen filling station on the outskirts of Reykavik, Iceland. The filling station is owned by Shell and is part of a project to help Iceland move from away from imported oil, to powering its vehicles with hydrogen. Iceland is committed to moving to a hydrogen economy by 2050. Iceland is ideally suited to a hydrogen economy as it has plentiful supplies of renewable generated electricity, that can be used to split water, to create hydrogen.

IMG_1252_cool.jpg Melt water on the Greenland ice sheet near camp Victor north of Ilulissat. The Greenland ice sheet is the largest ice sheet outside of Antarctica. Temperatues have risen by nine degrees fahrenheit in Greenland in the last 60 years due to human induced climate change. This is causing the ice sheet to melt at unprecedented rates which is deeply worrying as the ice sheet contains enough water to raise global sea levels by nine metres.
