This project involves drilling 6,000 feet beneath Newcastle, on the site of the old Newcastle Brown Brewery. At this depth, the geothermally heated water is 80 degrees C. The plan is for this renewable energy source to provide space heating for a shopping centre and University buildings.

Several square Km of moorland burned for four days. The blaze was tackled by fire fighters, but despite their efforts the blaze destroyed valuable moorland habitat, killing mammals and amphibians and destroying nesting birds nests. The wind farm was also closed down for a number of days as the blades were a danger to the helicopters fighting the blaze with aerial water drops. The Varoa mite is a parasite of honeybees that has increased hugely in recent years as a result of milder winters caused by climate change. The mite attacks both the adults and brood bees, sucking their blood and causing damage. Many bee colonies around the world, have collapsed due to the mite, deeply worrying as honeybees are resposible for pollinating the majority of food crops that humas rely on for food.

The drought in Victoria lead to catastrophic bush fires in 2009. on Balck Saturday the temperatures reached 47 degrees centigrade. Catastrophic forest fires left 173 people dead with 7000 left homeless. Such conditions are likely to become more common due to climate change.
