IMG_8779_sand dune.jpg on November 11th 2010 a deep low pressure crossed the Atlantic and slammed into the north west coastline. Winds of 100 mph battered the coast. In Lytham St Annes sand was blown from the coastal dunes inland and covered many roads and gardens.

IMG_6879_coastal protection.jpg Combating coastal erosion on a beach on the outskirts of Sydney. Rising sea levels caused by climate change are an increasing threat to Australia. The majority of Australia's population live around the coast so are incrasingly at risk of damage and erosion from sea level rise.

IMG_4693_tree.jpg China is in the middle of the worst drought in 50 years. Precipitation totals have fallen significantly across most of China's northern provinces. 60% of China's 669 major cities face water shortages, of these 110 face serious water shortages. Climate change modelling shows that Northern China is going to get significantly drier leading to crop failure and desertification which is already happening in many places in northern China. The Chinese are trying to combat this by planting millions of trees. Sadly many of these trees die as the ground is now just too dry to support them. Here trees are planted to try to halt the spread of sand dunes in Inner Mongolia, China.

Climate change modelling shows that Northern China is going to get significantly drier leading to crop failure and desertification which is already happening in many places. Rivers across China are suffering with many running at critically low levels. Some of this is due to over extraction of water but increasingly is due to climate change. This critically low river is in Shanxi province
