IMG_2469_smoker.jpg In 2008 China officially became the worlds largest emitter of C02 (greenhouse gases), largely driven by its ever increasing demand for energy most of which is met by producing electricity from coal fired power stations. Worryingly China is building a new coal fired power station every week and has huge reserves of coal, much of which is very low grade and highly polluting. Slum dwellings in Suihua, Heilongjiang Province pump out coal smoke into an already highly polluted atmosphere.

Worryingly China is building a new coal fired power station every week and has huge reserves of coal, much of which is very low grade and highly polluting. Here a coal fired cement factory billows smoke in Tongshuan, Shanxi Province, China. Cement is hugely carbon hungry in its production.

IMG_9229_chef.jpg A dish prepared by catering students from Kendal College, Cumbria, UK, using wild venison. Eating wild venison is climate friendly in two ways. Firstly it helps to cut down on food miles and the carbon footprint of food production. Secondly it helps local woodlands to regenerate. Many woodlands are negatively impacted by deer numbers, as they no longer have any natural predators.

IMG_2870_smiling.jpg A Business man on a Barclays Cycle Hire scheme, or Borris Bike, part of a green initiative by Transport for London. This docking station at Pentonville is one of many around the capital city where people, once registered can take a bike free for half an hour(charges apply after that time), the bike can either be returned to the same place, or any of the other docking stations around the city. This initiative will help to reduce car usage in the capital cutting down on pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and congestion.
