The fires were as a result of a prolonged drought and extreme high temperatures, conditions that are being exaserbated by climate change. One year on, the survivors are still living in emergency housing constructed on the edge of the town.

Here Sulpher Crested Cockatoos, one of many species wiped out in the fires have started to return to the burnt out forest.
