IMG_0005_gull.jpg The Krakken, a jack up barge, that is constructing the wind turbines of the Walney offshore wind farm lifts a nacell into place. The farm consists of 102, 3.6 MW turbines, giving a total capacity of the Walney project of 367.2 MW, enough to power 320,000 homes. The rotor diameter of the turbines is 107m for Walney 1 and 120 m for Walney 2. The wind farm is owned and constructed by Dong Energy. Cumbria, UK.

IMG_6436_hyperthermia.jpg Fruit Bats or flying foxs over Cairns in Queensland, Australia. These mammals feed on rainforest fruits are are an essential part of the ecosystem, helping to spread rainforest tree seeds. Climate change has lead to many periods of heatwave and excessive temperatures. Temperatures over 42 degrees centigrade (now not uncommon in many parts of the fruit bats range) have resulted in fruit bat mortality causing them to die form hyperthermia.

IMG_1278_varoa infection.jpg A bee that has deformed wings as a result of attack by Varoa mites in a beehive in Cockermouth, Cumbria, UK that has been infected and damaged by the Varoa mite. The Varoa mite is a parasite of honeybees that has increased hugely in recent years as a result of milder winters caused by climate change. The mite attacks both the adults and brood bees, sucking their blood and causing damage. Many bee colonies around the world, have collapsed due to the mite, deeply worrying as honeybees are resposible for pollinating the majority of food crops that humas rely on for food.
